CISA: Cyber Threats Are a Core Risk to Business

By David Weiss

Managed service providers (MSPs) have long recognized the importance of protecting their customers from cyberattacks. A top U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) official has just brought that need to the forefront for business leaders.

Speaking at the Wall Street Journal’s CIO Network Summit, CISA executive director Brandon Wales emphasized that companies must be more proactive when it comes to defending against cyber threats.

“You don’t want to start thinking about cybersecurity after your network has been brought down by a ransomware operator,” he said. “Every business should be thinking about how they can encourage their suppliers to provide them with products that are safe by design.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, Wales advocated for a strategic approach that MSPs understand very well: Companies must continue to invest in defending their data and encourage management to “treat hacking threats as a core business risk.”

Wales’ counsel to CIOs mirrored key talking points for MSPs when advising their small and medium-sized business (SMB) clients, including:

  • Address third-party risks when discussing cybersecurity
  • Use strong multifactor authentication to protect corporate systems
  • Ensure that any cloud-based services use secure methods to verify user identities, as hackers frequently compromise authentication processes when infiltrating networks

Datto solutions are made specifically for the needs of MSPs, with offerings to protect data across servers, virtual machines, cloud, endpoints, SaaS applications, and more.
