Business

Datto NAS provides businesses with a scalable, network-addressable storage device. Most often used as a common location for sharing files or backup target, it’s easy to implement and use. Simply plug it into the network, configure it to meet your needs, and all of the data stored on that Datto NAS will be readily available locally, backed up to the Cloud, and quickly recoverable in a disaster scenario.

Ransomware Recovery

Out of 1,100 Professional IT Services surveyed by Datto, “...more than 91% report clients victimised by ransomware, 40% of whom have experienced 6 or more attacks in the last year.” The report also found that, of the end-users who were victimised by ransomware, 93% had implemented Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware Software. By ensuring there are frequent backups of the Datto NAS stored off site, a business can roll back to a point in time before the attack, and you can get back to business.

File Sharing

In today’s business environment, sharing files among employees is table stakes. With Datto NAS, files are stored and available on the network in the protocol of choice, providing a single abstracted storage location across operating systems. Need to collaborate on files together? Then set Access Control Lists (ACLs) on those folders. Need to restrict users to read-only, then set ACLs on those folders. Need Windows, Mac and Linux users working together, then enable those protocols. Backup workstations and build business processes around Datto NAS, the flexibility to do what you need is there.

All in One Protection

Once all of your data is stored on a single device, there is now a single point of failure. While losing a drive is recoverable, losing many drives, the device, or the building is not easily recoverable. Datto provides a single, fully integrated Cloud protection layer in every device to protect from even the worst disasters. Simply configure the device snapshot schedule, run the first snapshot, and the data is protected in the secure Datto Cloud.

03

End-to-End Encryption

Datto NAS supports device level encryption. When enabled, all data on the device is stored using AES-256. In addition, all data is protected by SSL and AES-256 in transit and in the Cloud respectively. Users have the option to encrypt data locally, and passphrases can be specified per appliance or per protected machine.

04

Hot-swappable Bays

Datto NAS comes with preconfigured RAID and equipped with hot-swappable drive bays. This means local fault tolerance, faster on-site field upgrades, and fast replacement of lost disks. No more shutting down the system to fix a broken drive, or to add an upgrade, simply plug it in and get back to work.

05

Cloud File Restore

If you support end-users, someone eventually makes a mistake and deletes something they need. With Cloud based file restore, quickly access files from NAS Cloud snapshots and provide them to end-users to rapidly recover from accidents, and get users back to work.

06

User and Share Management

Create network drives in the control panel, add users, and then assign users to each share drive. Set permissions, public and private shares and manage admin access. Import users from Active Directory, and set group memberships, all from the Datto NAS configuration menus.

07

RoundTrip™ Drives

Depending on the speed of an internet connection and the amount of data to transfer, it can take days to upload an initial snapshot to the Cloud. RoundTrip™ drives speed this process by physically sending drives to Datto for the initial snapshot. Subsequent images use significantly less bandwidth and time.

08

Hybrid SSD and Spindle

While SSDs are fast, they remain more expensive and with generally a higher cost per TB than spinning drives. As a NAS is for data storage, the design point must balance capacity and performance. Datto NAS supports SSDs where it makes the most sense, for the operating system and swap space, and spinning drives for the bulk of the NAS storage capacity. This provides an overall highly performant device at a cost effective price.

09

PSA and RMM Integration

Datto NAS integrates seamlessly with the remote monitoring and management (RMM) and professional services automation (PSA) tools that are the lifeblood of a managed services practice. This means less time spent on technology and more time invested in growing your business.

10

Built in the USA

Datto NAS is designed and assembled in our own build facilities in the USA. Built from the best components available, Datto NAS is assembled by us to our exacting standards. From the design and 3D printing of custom fan ducting, to the alignment of cable ties, these exacting standards translate into saved money and time, whether in operation or when replacing parts to get a system back into operation.

11

Secure File Sync and Share

More than making files available in a drive on the local network, making the latest files available on any device, at any time, from anywhere makes business possible. This is why Datto NAS enables includes Datto Drive Local. Based on the same technology behind Datto Drive, simply click a button to install Datto Drive on the device. Configure Datto Drive Local and access files from the office, mobile devices, desktop sync clients, and the web.

Storage, Accessible Anywhere

First and foremost, Datto NAS is network attached storage.

  • For Windows, this is a Samba mount, which looks and acts to the Windows device much the same as a CIFS mounted drive.
  • For Macintosh, these drives are most often mounted via Samba or AFP (Apple Filing Protocol).
  • On Linux, these drives can be mounted via NFS or Samba, depending on the Linux device capabilities.
  • iSCSI mounts ensure access to data residing within the network and are seen as local volumes of the source machine.
  • Further, FTP and SFTP clients can also mount the Datto NAS, and users can also access it via a web browser.

Features

Datto NAS provides a tremendous number of features integrated into a single protected network storage platform.

01

NAS Storage and Backup

File shares are a critical source of business data. Create file shares on the local network and share them via Samba, AFP, NFS, FTP, SFTP, and web browsers. Of course, any files stored on the NAS will be protected and backed up to the Datto Cloud according to the local snapshot and offsite synchronisation settings.

02

New Hardware

Datto NAS 3 will have totally new hardware as of DattoCon EMEA in October 2016, ranging from 500GB - 120TB. Our NAS 3 series is now delivered with the same robust hardware of SIRIS and ALTO models, but with the specialized Datto NAS 3 features described here. Expanded memory and storage options allow for a variety of additional use cases.

03

Datto Drive Local—File Sync & Share

More than making files available in a drive on the local network, making the latest files available on any device, at any time makes business possible. This is why Datto NAS supports Datto Drive local. Based on the same technology behind Datto Drive, simply click a button to install Datto Drive on the device. Configure Datto Drive Local and access files from the office, mobile devices, desktop sync clients, and the web.

04

NAS Guard

Not all network storage is protected by the cloud. This is why Datto NAS 3 can mount other network storage locations and automatically schedule and copy data from other devices to the Datto NAS. This will provide an efficient, replicable backup of a network share, performing local incrementals. Then, scheduled replication to the Datto Cloud provides backup job management and long term retention. Available Q4 2016.

05

ZFS Deduplication

ZFS Deduplication performs block level deduplication of DNAS data as it is stored, greatly reducing the storage required to store data. ZFS deduplication can be turned off or on per share. Data stored on the NAS is deduplicated at the filesystem level. This means that you can store more data on the NAS and use less disk space. This also means cloud snapshots are smaller, transmit to the cloud faster, and use less cloud storage space, saving time and money.

06

Infinite Cloud Retention

The most difficult challenge regarding cloud protection of data is selecting which data to protect. Datto NAS solves this problem by introducing an unlimited cloud storage plan. No more deciding what to protect and what not to protect, simply protect it all because when disaster strikes, you never know which files you will need.

07

Snapshot controls for NAS shares

When backing up a network share hosted on Datto NAS 3, admins can now configure snapshot retention settings to retain local images and push them to the cloud in as little as 1 day. This allows admins to minimize the number of images stored locally while retaining a complete history in the cloud.

NAS 3 Architecture

Architecturally, NAS 3 is an x64 Linux server. Designed from the ground up to be a Total Data Protection platform, use of this enterprise grade architecture translates into cost efficiency, performance, scalability and extensibility. This approach also enables Datto to continue to innovate, add new ground-breaking features, and expand the platform well into the future.

Within the x64 server, SIRIS 3 is a complex combination of standard and proprietary software integrated into a single Data Protection platform, including:

_illustration-nas-architecture
_icon-hexagon

Ubuntu 16.04

The latest release of one of the most popular Linux variants on the market, providing enterprise class security, manageability and performance in a small footprint. Ubuntu is the basic operating system for all SIRIS products, and supports many standard packages that SIRIS uses as building blocks for the platform.

_icon-hexagon

DattoZFS

The base filesystem used in the SIRIS built on industry standard ZFS. IT provides protection against data corruption, support for high storage capacities, efficient data compression, integration of the concepts of filesystem and volume management, snapshots, copy-on-write clones, and RAID. It is used as the basis for continuous integrity checking and automatic repair with enhancements to enable Inverse Chains, Instant Virtualisation, and a host of other capabilities.

_icon-hexagon

Apache

The most popular general purpose web server in the world, running more than half the world’s websites. Apache provides the basic web hosting capabilities for the Remote Web management connection, web based file restores, web based NAS file access, and ownCloud on SIRIS.

_icon-hexagon

PHP 7 and FPM

The latest and most performant release of the popular PHP web development platform combined with the benefits of the FastCGI Process Manager. PHP is the application language for the SIRIS 3 platform, and FPM is the mechanism used by Apache to turn PHP into executable bits at runtime. This combination dramatically enhances SIRIS performance, while enabling better memory management, adaptive process spawning and other goodies that make the SIRIS 3 platform more capable across the board.

_icon-hexagon

SpeedSync

Datto’s proprietary weighted replication algorithm that enables SIRIS to more efficiently sync data with the Datto Cloud. Built on the efficient LZMA2 compression algorithm, SpeedSync enables multiple images to be pushed off site to the Datto Cloud at one time, subject to bandwidth throttling settings.

How it can be deployed

Datto NAS is available as a hardware appliance in three form factors built to your use case in our manufacturing facilities: powerful processors, DDR3 memory, two to four NICs, and physical platforms ranging from four- or eight- drive bay enclosures or a 2U rack mounted unit for a variety of storage options.

Management for the Datto NAS device is, like our other Datto data protection products, available through our web based Administration console. Easily connect the device, define shares, create Cloud backup configurations, and initiate recoveries from a single pane of glass.
