Variant of Locky Ransomware on the Rise
A prolific strain of ransomware has reappeared. A new form of Locky has begun to spread in a massive email campaign.
The Locky variant adds a Diablo6 extension, distributed through spam emails containing the subject lines similar to E 2017-08-09 (698).docx with a message "Files attached. Thanks".
Currently, the hackers are demanding a ransom payment of .49 Bitcoin or roughly £1250.
The original form of Locky wreaked havoc on businesses in the past, netting a total of £6.1 million in payments.
According to Bleeping Computer, it isn’t yet possible to decrypt files for free, so a backup and disaster recovery solution is the only way to recover data in the event of an attack.
