The Ransomware Files: Best Practices for Every MSP
As mentioned in Datto’s European State of the Channel Ransomware Report, downtime costs are up by 300% year-over-year, resulting in the cost of downtime being 53X greater than the average ransom requested in 2019. It is clear that Ransomware is showing no signs of slowing down. There are more and more strains causing chaos across businesses every day, and Managed Service Providers, (MSPs), are becoming increasingly aware that it is vital to protect every inch of their client’s businesses. We sat down with Michael Douglas, Commercial Director, at Yellowbus Solutions Ltd to discuss his approach to protecting his client’s data and why he thinks the increase in ransomware attacks could be down to the speed of technology enhancements.
Why do you think ransomware attacks have become so prevalent over the last few years?
With the speed of technology enhancements and with the rapid adaption of Cloud across businesses, not only does this create opportunities for growing businesses but it also gives cybercriminals more opportunities to compromise. There is more data stored on the cloud and across the internet than ever before and this creates a real problem for businesses.
Do you think ransomware attacks will continue at the current level we are seeing?
The ‘speed of business’ is getting faster, and this is facilitated by the fast rate of technological advancements. As the tech adoption rate increases, so will the threat of ransomware and similar attacks. Threats are only going to increase, speed up and become more intelligent.
What three pieces of advice would you give to your clients in regards to Ransomware?
As an MSP it is your responsibility to educate and protect your clients and their data. Data security and protection should be top of the priority list. It all starts with education – The 3 main areas MSPs should educate, consult, and support are:
- Educate the People – Most threats and vulnerabilities come from human errors. You can have the best protection in the world, but it only takes a member of staff to click a phishing email that could cause huge repercussions to the business. The people across all levels of the business need training about basic cyber security, threat and ransomware awareness and how to respond if they think they have found a threat.
- Think like an ‘MSSP’ – MSP’s need to think and act like a ‘Managed Security Service provider’. Leading with security will ensure all solutions and services will be designed to protect the client and staff from threats.
- Leverage Technology – When it comes to ransomware and other cybersecurity threats, you need to fight tech with tech. Working with a technology vendor like Datto means you can leverage their technologies and expertise giving your MSP a more solid offering, and further security for your client.
Being ahead of the game can be tough. What advice would you give your peers when it comes to knowing about the latest developments in ransomware?
Every MSP should have someone with the responsibility of ‘security’. Having a dedicated role and responsibility defined, this ensures accountability. This role needs to keep on the pulse in terms of threats and technologies. This can come from monitoring and alerts from security bulletins, vendor alerts, and industry events.
What one solution would you encourage every MSP to have, in order to better protect their clients against ransomware?
Once staff has adequate cyber security awareness training, the solution all MSPs need to be advising their clients as a must is an offsite secure backup and replication service. This allows peace of mind for the customer (and you as their MSP!) that if data is lost or compromised, there is a close to 100% chance of being able to restore to different data sets to restore services to the business asap.
