Only 25 percent Of UK Law Firms Are Prepared For GDPR

By Annie Stroud

With GDPR right around the corner, it comes as no surprise that companies are either rushing to make sure they are ready, or are not prepared at all. A recent report from CenturyLink has stated that only 25% of UK Law Firms are prepared for GDPR. Over 150 legal sector IT decision makers in the UK were questioned and only 25% believe that they are currently compliant with GDPR.

In the past year 1 in 5 law firms have experienced an attempted cyber attack, meaning that the percentage of cyber attacks within law firms has risen to 44% over the past year. This came as quite a surprise for those working in the sector, especially as law firms hold a vast amount of personal data and understand the consequences such attacks could create.

There is now just 6 months to make sure you are GDPR compliant. Now is the time to educate yourself and your staff in order to ensure your business remains protected and you adhere to the new regulations.

Brexit also remains a hot topic within most GDPR conversations. However, it is clear that regardless of Brexit, UK organisations dealing with personal data will still need to ensure they are GDPR compliant.

Joanne Frears, Consulting solicitor at Blandy & Blandy, stated that “GDPR will not provide a solution for GDPR concerns. Perhaps most firms think Brexit is a cure for GDPR.” GDPR will come into force before Brexit comes into action. The Government have said that the regulation will still apply.
