Getting the Most Out of DattoCon
As I’m beginning to think about my 10th DattoCon, I thought I’d share a few quick tips on how to make the most of it.
I’m saying this as much for my benefit as anyone else's. I always take far too many things, unpack everything, and then put what seems like most of it back in the case after the event.
DattoCon is a laid back affair. It may be in Paris this year, but I won’t be rocking the haute couture. If you’re worried about not taking enough, rest assured the famous DattoCon swag will ensure you’re suited and booted! You won’t be short of t-shirts to wear, I can promise you that. There are usually plenty of socks going around too.
You’ll also want to leave room in your case for the massive amount of really interesting freebies that you pick up along the way.
Don’t forget the absolute essentials: - phone charger, Euro-travel adaptor, Ibuprofen, toothbrush.
Take Business Cards
Most of the sponsors will have some kind of raffle on the go. As the old saying goes, you’ve got to be “In it, to win it”, so take cards to drop in the draw. There is literally nothing to lose in having a go, apart from the possible situation where you win a 40” TV that you have to somehow work out how to get home.
Speak to Sponsors
Sponsors love MSPs, they really want to speak to you. Datto has invited many sponsors to DattoCon, some offer complementary products, and some compete with Datto in areas.
This is an open ecosystem and we want you to speak to them all. I’ve been on the MSP side of the fence and now the vendor side, trust me - It’s good to talk. Sponsors are people too you know, or at least most of them are.
Without sponsors, DattoCon wouldn’t be the event it is now, so show them some love, watch their demos, enjoy their socks, and of course drink their booze!
Study the Agenda
Take time to plan your day, I find it good to step outside my comfort zone at times (this may explain my terracotta trousers now I think about it.) You may not think the keynotes are for you, but trust me, you will get something from them.
Get up Early
The days start pretty early, but they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It’s even more important when Bloody Marys and Bucks Fizz are on the menu. (I can’t bring myself to call it a Mimosa). Bacon is a big thing at DattoCon too, if you enjoy that sort of thing.
I’ve met people at DattoCon who are now firm friends, this is a great space to meet people who share at least one common interest with you (Datto of course). Take the time to speak to people, ask them what they’re looking to achieve, ask them where they are from, and if you see me, ask me what I’m drinking.
There’s plenty of serious talk at DattoCon to keep you going, so that makes it even more important to have fun. The Elements Party is legendary in the MSP Community. If you’ve never seen hundreds of MSPs dance to cover versions of 80’s synth pop, then you’ve never been to DattoCon. The food, drink, and entertainment are amazing and it’s a great way to close off your DattoCon experience.
Just don’t book a flight too early the following day.
See You There?
This is shaping up to be the best DattoCon yet, certainly the largest MSP centric event ever held in Europe. I spoke recently about the evolution of DattoCon in the region from around 100 MSPs in 2015. I was hoping for 750 in Paris, and we are already over 800 registered.
It’s not too late to join us - head to paris.dattocon.com and get packing.
