Cybersecurity Ransomware
2016 has been a year of bad news. And it’s set to get worse. Ransomware, the web’s most despised super villain, has reached a level of notoriety that would turn the Joker green with envy. What makes Cryptolocker and co’ so good at what they do is their indiscriminate nature. Ransomware is running rampant across the globe, and the authorities are taking notice. Europol has categorised ransomware as the biggest cyber threat to consumers and businesses today. According to the alert, some of the most prolific ransomware strains posing a threat to European users include Cryptolocker, Teslacrypt, and CTB-Locker. In Europol’s 2016 Internet Organised Crime Threat Assessment (IOCTA), their research shows ransomware is overshadowing traditional cybersecurity threats, and in some European Union countries, cybercrime has possibly surpassed traditional crime in terms of reporting. This is the latest in a trend of government organisations increasing their vigilance. Recently, the Department of Homeland Security issued a ransomware alert to warn consumers of the increasing cybersecurity threat. The FBI also issued a ransomware alert, urging victims to come forward and report ransomware incidents.
