Chinese Shipping Company hit by Ransomware Attack

Ransomware

Chinese shipping company Cosco’s electronic communications are disabled after falling victim to a Windows-related ransomware attack.

The attack has affected the company’s United States website, email, and some phone lines. According to a statement from Cosco, the local networking breakdown affected its American region and they have isolated the offices while they investigate.

According to their Facebook page, the attack didn’t interrupt their shipping operations and they expect a full and quick recovery. Currently, this attack seems to be less severe than last year’s attack on Maersk.

While there are no current details on the ransom demand, that’s often not the biggest concern after an attack. As we found in Datto’s State of the Channel Ransomware Report, the ransom demand will often pale in comparison to the associated downtime costs and lost revenue when you can't resume normal business operations.

However, there’s still hope for businesses when it comes to preventing ransomware. According to a survey of our partners, BCDR is the most effective ransomware protection.
