Backup FAQs: The Most Asked Questions at MSP Technology Day

By Erin Stephan

Our most recent MSP Technology Day focused on our Unified Continuity line of products, featuring business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) and SaaS Protection. The audience had tons of great questions, but we couldn’t get to them all. Here’s a round-up of some of the most frequently asked questions from Tech Day.

SaaS Protection

Q: We’d really benefit from an integration between SaaS Protection and our PSA. Is this in the roadmap?

A: We continuously evolve SaaS Protection and are looking at ways to streamline billing with various PSA solutions. This integration is currently on our roadmap but is not yet available. However, we have built two specific tools for Datto partners to aid in license management and billing. First, our new SaaS Protection Status Page contains a section dedicated to License Management. It gives full transparency to MSPs on what licenses were billed last month, and what will be billed in the upcoming month. Second, we have built in the ability to export license counts by client to CSV, to make the task of reconciling usage easier. We will continue to provide updates on the progress of the full PSA integration throughout the year. Please reach out to your Datto representative if you would like to share use cases that would benefit your organisation.

Q: PST Export - When is this available, and how do we use it?

A: At this time, we export mailbox data as an MBOX format. While we continue to evaluate a PST export option, there are many MBOX to PST converters available if you find a need for that functionality.

Q: What does Datto SaaS Protection back up?

A: SaaS Protection offers all-in-one backup, search, restore, and export for Microsoft Exchange, Tasks, OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams, as well as G Suite backup, search, restore, and export for Gmail, Calendar, Contacts, and Shared Drives.

Q: What aspects of Microsoft Teams are protected by SaaS Protection?

A: Protected data in Microsoft Teams consists of content, conversations, and calendar meetings that reside at the team level or are associated with public channels. You can learn more in our Knowledge Base.

Q: Does Datto SaaS Protection offer a Not for Resale (NFR) program?

A: Yes. Datto SaaS Protection makes it even easier for you to demo and pilot the Datto SaaS Protection product with your clients. As part of our streamlined onboarding process, you can add a new NFR client in a matter of minutes. Each NFR client can have one Microsoft 365 and one G Suite domain. There is no limit to the number of seats you can have, and all seats default to time-based retention, with a retention length of one year.

Q: What marketing resources are available for Datto Continuity and SaaS Protection?

A: MarketNow is a robust marketing automation platform that allows Datto partners to launch pre-built email and social campaigns, access a library of co-branded content, and manage leads from prospect to sale. It’s one of the many benefits of Datto’s Global Partner Program that’s offered to all partners at no cost. Access MarketNow from the Datto Partner Portal. You can also download the QuickStart Guide or view an on-demand on-boarding webinar to learn more.

Q: Where is my data stored?

A: Your data is securely stored in Datto’s Cloud, which was purpose-built for backup. Data is hosted and geo-replicated to 10 data centres globally, in five distinct regions. All data is encrypted at rest and in transit. Our data centres are SOC 2 Type II compliant at both the app and the infrastructure level.

Q: Admin rights - What roles do what? Does managing Datto SaaS Protection require administrative privileges?

A: Datto SaaS Protection requires an “Admin” or “Tech” role in the Partner Portal. From the Partner Portal, those assigned users can access the SaaS Protection Status page and manage clients. For more information please review this Knowledge Base article.

Unified Continuity

Q: Can Datto’s BCDR solution be used for workstations as well as servers? Or is Cloud Continuity the product for workstations?

A: BCDR can be used for workstations as well as servers. The workstation needs to be stationary (not in and out of the environment like laptops). Laptops are an ideal candidate for Cloud Continuity.

Q: Will Datto support Hyper-V Agentless in the future?

A: Hyper-V agentless is not supported at the moment, but we continue to invest in this area. Although not currently supported, agentless for Hyper-V is something we are spending time reviewing and would appreciate talking to partners who have specific use cases for an agentless offering for Hyper-V.

Q: In the event of a DR onsite, will a BCDR cloud virtualisation allow clients to function via remote desktop protocol (RDP) or cloud access while onsite physical devices are replaced or repaired?

A: Yes - this is part of our total offering. Depending on the use of the source machine, we offer local virtualisation, virtualisation in our cloud, or both. The BCDR device will set up the connection between cloud and customer infrastructure.

Q: Do you plan to build out a BCDR-RMM integration with other RMM tools?

A: As we can do a bit more with our own products, Datto RMM took a front seat. However, further integration with other RMM tools is definitely something we are considering. We also have an existing integration with ConnectWise Automate.

Q: As it pertains to the BCDR/RMM integration and the new UI, is there a tutorial that shows how it works? Additionally, are there new widgets that will be rolled out to truly make this a single point of use?

A: Review this article for a detailed overview of the BCDR/RMM integration. We also have a helpful video that outlines the benefits of the integration.
