Diagnostics Firm Cuts Operating Costs with BDR

One of GRIP I.T.’s clients, a molecular diagnostics firm, headquartered in Markham, Ontario, has a definite need for both securing data and maintaining business operations. The diagnostics firm focuses on the development and application of functional genomics to enable early diagnosis and personalized health management based on disease specific biomarkers. Not only is the data it creates and manages irreplaceable, its lead product is a blood-based molecular test that aids physicians in determining an individual’s risk of having colorectal cancer; it quite literally helps save lives. Downtime is most certainly not an option.

The diagnostics firm had been using a tape-based solution for its mission-critical backup, disaster recovery (BDR) needs. Their challenge to GRIP I.T. was, “we need a BDR solution that is less complicated, more cost effective and efficient, and with minimal risks.” No doubt this is a mandate heard by many Managed Service Providers (MSPs).

A look at the diagnostics firm’s previous set-up will shed light as to why it was so important to migrate to a more robust solution. They had two tape libraries to perform daily and weekly backups on data, mailboxes and an Oracle database—this set up was much too time consuming. The runtime for a full daily backup on only their Exchange server was 18 to 22 hours. Two additional CGDATA databases took up to 38 all practical.

Regarding tape rotations, they had a 4-week tape set rotation for their off-site storage, with tape changes scheduled every Monday, and pick ups / delivery every Wednesday. Given the mission-critical data, it was not an effective way to ensure secure, redundant off-site data backup. The likely deterioration of magnetic tapes after a period of time was another potential hazard.

To compound the lengthy backup time and labor-intensive nature of the tape backups, the process was also expensive. Costs included in-house labor, cost of tape libraries, off-site services, and, of course, downtime.

Datto worked with GRIP I.T. to customize the SIRIS 2 too meet the specific needs of the diagnostics firm, including the ability for GRIP I.T. to host the SIRIS 2 in their own data center. For MSP and client, this removed the risk of magnetic tape deterioration. It also made the entire system more efficient by eliminating run-time and labor costs associated with the manual tape backup process. The option to move to Datto’s secure Canadian data center is open, should they wish to transfer the data.
