The Hardware Engineering team at Datto designs computer and server hardware solutions for our edge fleet backup appliances and next-wave hyperscale private cloud.  Collaborating with global vendors and OEM partners, we design systems to ensure the best product experience for our customers. This includes everything from researching new hardware and computer technologies, developing new system configurations, to design testing and benchmarking.

Job Overview: 

We are growing our hardware team to test and benchmark new computer hardware systems. This role will influence design and supports our BCDR product line which has annual product releases. The role will also support new cloud architecture system designs and initiatives.

A Look Inside the Job:

  • Influence computer hardware design for edge fleet backup appliances and cloud infrastructure. 
  • Develop test and benchmarking procedures to validate hardware products
  • Collaborate with supply chain OEM vendors such as Dell, Lenovo and HP to develop custom-off the shelf hardware solutions from product concept to launch
  • Validate the compatibility and performance of components and system with software
  • Assist with engineering documentation; schematics, block diagrams, test procedures, bill of materials, etc.
  • Collect, analyze and present statistical data regarding system and component performance
  • Lead collaboration with vendors for understanding new technologies and offerings
  • Analyze server systems to identify design flaws, optimize for bandwidth and IOPS
  • Develop and conduct functional and environmental acceptance verification tests of new designs (thermal, noise, redundancy functionality, BIOS/UEFI, OS kernel and compatibility)
  • Maintain knowledge of the latest computer industry trends and understanding of how to implement them in systems

About You:

  • At least three years of applicable professional computer hardware design experience
  • Experience working with OEM or white-box computer hardware vendors
  • Knowledge of:
    • Computer system components: HDD, SSD, PCIe, SATA, NVMe, SAS, Optane
    • Linux/Ubuntu performance testing tools

Bonus Points:

  • BS Computer Engineering or Hardware Systems
  • Experience with ZFS, Python, Ceph, Openstack, Swift
