Thanksgiving travel almost turned into a disaster when the San Francisco Muni fare system was hit with a ransomware attack on Friday afternoon.
The ticketing computers displayed a message that read “You Hacked, ALL Data Encrypted” and the hackers demanded a ransom of 100 Bitcoin or about $70,000. The attack infected over 2,000 computers including office desktops, email and print servers, payroll systems and more. Despite the scare, there was no impact on train service and no personal information was leaked. As of today, the ticketing systems are fully operational and the ransom, fortunately, was not paid.
