Ransomware News: Ryuk Targeting Organizations in Canada and United States

Ransomware

A new strain of ransomware known as Ryuk is targeting specific organizations across Canada and the United States and exfiltrating data. Typically, ransomware only encrypts information as demonstrated in the case of the Pennsylvania Senate, however, this strain is particularly nasty and takes the extra step to compromise confidential information.

According to reports, Ryuk has hit at least four healthcare organizations in Canada, with a typical ransom demand of 40-50 bitcoin ($34,000 to $42,000). Researchers believe the targets are carefully selected and possibly even infiltrated prior to the ransomware attack.

In addition to the attack on Canadian organizations, Ryuk has also surfaced in North Carolina. The Onslow Water and Sewer Authority experienced a run-in with Ryuk over the weekend, resulting in a catastrophic loss in their computer networking, according to reports and an untold cost due to business downtime.
