Ransomware News: New Malware Strain Appears, Louisiana Avoids Widespread Infection

A new strain of ransomware known as NextCry is targeting some file sync and share users. According to Bleeping Computer, the ransomware strain is currently undetected by antivirus software and is targeting NextCloud users.

In one known case, the attackers demanded about $200 worth of bitcoin. Users are encouraged to update to a recent patch from last October to help avoid this vulnerability.

Louisiana Contains Ransomware Attack

Thanks to quick thinking and a proactive cybersecurity response, Louisiana was able to mitigate a recent ransomware attack and avoid a full disaster.

According to Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, the state activated its cybersecurity team in response to an attack affecting some servers.

Unfortunately, the attack has forced some services are still offline after the November 18th attack. However, taking systems offline prevented the further spread of the attack and helped them avoid having to pay a ransom demand to the attackers.
