Health Records of Millions Compromised in Breach
The personal data of millions of Americans may be at risk yet again. A health insurance company, Banner Health, has notified 3.7 million customers and healthcare providers that their data may be at risk, according to the BBC. The information may include names, birth dates, social security numbers, and personal information related to medical history.
According to an investigation launched by Banner Health, hackers gained access to computer systems that process data at food and beverage outlets at some Banner Health locations. The attack was occurred on June 17 and was discovered by Banner on July 7. According to Banner, cards used at these outlets between June 23 and July 7 may be affected. Banner has listed the affected outlets where security may have been breached.
This is just the latest in the trend of attacks on the healthcare industry, with some notable cases including ransomware attacks on Kansas Heart Hospital, Hollywood Presbyterian, and the breach of Anthem Inc. in 2015.
