Europol Categories Ransomware As Top Cybersecurity Threat

Ransomware is running rampant across the globe, and the authorities are taking notice. Europol has categorized ransomware as the biggest cyber threat to consumers and businesses today.

According to the alert, some of the most prolific ransomware strains posing a threat to European users include Cryptolocker, Teslacrypt, and CTB-Locker. In Europol’s 2016 Internet Organized Crime Threat Assessment (IOCTA), their research shows ransomware is overshadowing traditional cybersecurity threats, and in some European Union countries, cybercrime has possibly surpassed traditional crime in terms of reporting.

This is the latest in a trend of government organizations increasing their vigilance. Recently, the Department of Homeland Security issued a ransomware alert to warn consumers of the increasing cybersecurity threat. The FBI also issued a ransomware alert, urging victims to come forward and report ransomware incidents.

As we found in Datto’s State of the Channel Ransomware Report 2016, the malware threat is increasing at an alarming rate, and it’s only going to get worse. In addition, our report found that fewer than 1 in 4 victims report ransomware incidents to the authorities.
