Minimise IT downtime with server virtualisation recovery
By Andrew Burton
What is server virtualisation?
Server virtualisation is a server resource management method that splits up one physical server into many virtual machines. It is governed by specialised software called a hypervisor. Server virtualisation improves server hardware usage, while reducing cost and complexity.
What is the difference between virtualisation and recovery with virtualisation?
Today, most 64-bit servers are virtualised, giving organisations the ability to make a single physical server function like multiple virtual machines (VM). Hypervisor software, such as VMware or Microsoft Hyper V, gives IT administrators the flexibility of allocating server resources such as CPU and memory to a VM dynamically. It also enables administrators to move VMs amongst hosts.
Datto SIRIS is an all in one BCDR solution that uses server virtualisation to rapidly restore clients’ business operations. This feature is known as Instant Virtualisation.
It enables Managed Service Providers to quickly boot a recovery VM from a backup. The recovery VM is typically used for a short period of time while the primary server is recovered. This ensures that end-user productivity is minimally impacted, optimising recovery time objective (RTO) to minimise downtime and its associated costs.
Any Datto SIRIS backup can be utilised to create the recovery VM, either locally or in the Datto Cloud. In other words, MSPs can utilise either the most current backup, or one of any previous backup. This gives flexibility around recovery point objectives (RPO), and allows MSPs to select a “clean” backup image to restore from. This is particularly important for ransomware recovery.
How can server virtualisation reduce downtime?
In a world where reliance on technology is only increasing, Managed Service Providers (MSP) must ensure their clients’ data stays safe. We all know mistakes happen and even a few minutes downtime can be costly for some small businesses.
As a Managed Service Provider, your clients expect you to protect their data and ensure a quick recovery, if disaster strikes.
Data disasters come in all forms. From human error, to cyber attacks and even hardware failure, it’s important to be prepared for the worst. This is where a business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) solution comes into play.
If a server goes down, Datto’s BCDR solution, SIRIS can ensure the business keeps running and downtime costs are minimised. Datto SIRIS opens up new service opportunities by enabling MSPs to offer Disaster Recovery as a service (DRaaS) to their clients.
When a physical server or virtual machine (VM) is corrupted or is unavailable, it can be recovered with Datto SIRIS. Instant Virtualisation enables you to both virtualise on the appliance itself or in Datto’s secure cloud. You can even execute this process remotely via our cloud management portal. This enables MSPs to remotely manage their BCDR appliances and enact server virtualisation in a matter of minutes.
Datto SIRIS is a BCDR solution that's built for MSPs from the ground up and with no extra charges. Experience Datto SIRIS for yourself, schedule a demo today.
