Is WannaCry 2.0 in our Future?

By Chris Brunau

It appears last week’s WannaCry ransomware attack was only the beginning. Despite a UK researcher creating a kill switch that slowed the infection rate, we may be due for WannaCry 2.0.

The virus has spread across the globe, affecting various industries including healthcare, transportation, government agencies, and more. Over the weekend, the initial attack has infected over 200,000 systems in over 150 countries. Security experts warn another large scale attack could be coming as soon as today.

Microsoft is referring to the attack as a wake-up call and a reminder for users to apply the most recent security updates. An update was released in March 2017 to protect against the virus, but it appears many users may have failed to download it, including the NHS organizations in the UK widely affected by the attack.

Datto Partner Saves the Day

Geek Pty Ltd, an Australian MSP and Datto partner, has helped save their clients from falling victim to WannaCry. Geek found and chairman, Jon Paior, said they helped a client save $24,000 in only 15 minutes. Paior said the client’s previous solution would have taken at least six hours to restore the data, costing them about $4,000 per hour of downtime.
